Join in organizing the 2026 competition here!
Chalmers Structural Design Challenge (CSDC) is a student-initiated design competition at Chalmers University of Technology that has been held every year since 2007 in collaboration with industry partners, student organizations and the university.
The competition, also known as the ‘Bridge Building Challenge,’ takes place in the autumn and is intended for second- and third-year students in the A, AT, Æ and SB programs, as well as master’s students in Architecture and Civil Engineering.
This year's competition was won by the bridge Sway-way and the audience choice award was won by the bridge Cao Mao!
Feel free to visit the photo archive for pictures from previous years’ competitions and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to not miss future updates!
Each team shall, using the designated materials, design and construct a wooden bridge that will span ‘A-dammen’ (the pond outside the SB-building). Consideration must be given to how the bridge will be used, experienced, and perceived in terms of construction choice, design, and safety.
During the final, a qualified jury will evaluate the bridges based on how well they are suited to their purpose, as well as the following criteria:
Aesthetics, experience, concept, innovation, optimized construction, and functionality.

Students have big ambitions but without companies and organisations willing to support CSDC, the Bridge Building Challenge at Chalmers wouldn’t exist.
Both the organising committee and the competition participants truly appreciate the chance to connect with and experience engaged companies in this unique context. Career fairs are great but we think a Bridge Building Challenge is even better.
In return for supporting CSDC, companies have the opportunity to host various activities for the participants. Lunch lectures are common, but other types of events are also welcome and always appreciated.
If you or your company are interested in learning more about CSDC, getting involved in the competition, or connecting with the participants in other ways, feel free to contact the committee at info@csdc.se.

We are constantly working to develop and improve the competition. If you have ideas, or want contribute or be visible during the event, we would love to hear from you. Use the form or email us at:
